The focus of this unit is mental health assessment and appropriate clinical interventions for people who are affected by the symptoms of mental illness, including consumers and their significant others. Framed within the context of person-centred care, factors that affect mental health are examined, together with the symptoms of mental illness and disorder, and the impact of these symptoms upon consumers and significant others. The student will also appraise the interventions and supports that are available to assist those who are affected by the symptoms of mental illness, and develop the skills to apply this knowledge in practice.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Appraise the major issues affecting people who are affected by the symptoms of mental illness, including those associated with the major mood, psychotic and behavioural disorders;
2. Critically evaluate the process of mental health assessment of people who are affected by the symptoms of mental illness; and
3. Demonstrate appropriate application of a range of interventions and approaches to meet the needs of people who are affected by the symptoms of mental illness, including consumers, carers, families, and communities.

This unit is only available to students in Master of Nursing 261JA, Master of Counselling 341JA, Graduate Diploma of Counselling 342JA or Graduate Diploma of Nursing 260JA.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

It is the student's responsibility to be familiar with the electronic submission process (e.g. the use of UCLEARN and URKUND). Students are reminded to ensure they plan well enabling adequate time to submit assessments prior to the deadline, in order to avoid a mark adjustment

Special assessment requirements

All Assignments in this unit are graded. In order to pass this unit, all assignments must be submitted and an overall mark of 50% or more must be reached.

Grounds for applying for an extension on assignments

The onus rests on students to comply with timeliness for completing and submitting assignments and this is part of the good management and performance skills you need to develop through the educational process. Lecturers also have a responsibility to ensure equity and fairness to the majority of students who submit their assignments on time. For these reasons, you need to establish genuine circumstances for an extension to be granted. You will need to supply documentary evidence to establish the genuine nature of your circumstances.

Process for applying for an extension: Requests for extension should be on the Assignment Extension Application form which you can access from the UCLearn site. Applications MUST be submitted at least 2 days prior to submission data.

Participation requirements

It is expected that students will actively participate in the group discussion forum as the materials and activities will assist students in developing the knowledge and skills required to assess and respond to people who present with mental illness and mental disorders.

You must be able to word process assignments so that they are well presented, search the library data bases for relevant journal articles and access the UCLearn Web site for this unit. It is the individual student's responsibility to access appropriate help from the University IT services or the library if he or she does not have adequate skills.
