Public Administration G (8556.4)

This unit provides an introduction to the discipline and practice of public management in Westminster-style democracies in general and Australia in particular. It examines the role of the public sector and introduces some of the key issues with which governments and academics have been grappling for the past 20 years or so when traditional models of public administration have been challenged. While the emphasis is on Australian developments, they are represented in such a way that they may be seen as part of more general re-design processes in public management systems.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Explain the principles and values underpinning traditional and contemporary models of public administration;
2. Critically appreciate the patterns of change across public administration systems over time;
3. Critically evaluate current problems in public administration; and
4. Apply problems solving skills to public sector organisational problems.
