Design and Architecture Professional Placement PG (8416.5)

In this work-integrated-learning (WIL) unit students are placed with a professional, industry or government partner to undertake a specific project in design or research. The unit provides students with an opportunity to apply theory to practice and to further develop the skills and knowledge they have gained as part of their course. The Unit Convenor will approve the project parameters and objectives. Faculty and Staff of the external partner will mentor students, with ongoing and regular input from Faculty staff. Expected outcomes will vary depending on the nature of the placement but will include a professional project and/or analytical report, as assessed by the University, to satisfy both the academic requirements of the University and the professional imperatives of the agency, company or practice. Students do not receive payment for these placements.

Learning outcomes

1. On successful completion of this unit students will be able to: Demonstrate an enhanced understanding of the relationship between design-based or technically-led research and professional practice;
2. Demonstrate initiative, advanced knowledge and skills development derived from an engagement with the professional and/or research environments within practice;
3. Understand and evaluate the architect or designer's role in the design professions; and
4. Demonstrate advanced communication skills, to interact at a professional level with colleagues and clients using appropriate media.
