This unit provides an advanced study of physiology at the cellular level with an emphasis on the three integrative systems: the nervous, the endocrine systems and the immune system. We will explore how cellular integration and cellular interaction are able to generate complex cognitive functions such as the control and maintenance of homeostasis, and the balance between health and disease.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Relate the interconnection of the body’s physiological control systems, homeostasis and the interrelationship of structure and function from a perspective that spans from conception to death;
2. Integrate their knowledge of the body systems to contrast normal physiology and anatomy with the effects of disease or degeneration;
3. Critically evaluate the implications of these changes;
4. Synthesise and apply this knowledge to real situations;
5. Work independently and with others as part of a group;
6. Communicate their views effectively both verbally and in writing;
7. Support their arguments with recent scientific literature; and
8. Identify, critically analyse, interpret, debate and/or role play issues raised in the unit.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

Your assignment and online quizzes will be submitted through Canvas, while your Mid-Semester and End-of-Semester Tests will be undertaken in class. 

Online quizzes should be completed in the time available (7 days). 

You can apply for an extension for your assignment before the due date as described above.

Any application for a deferred Mid-Semester or End-of-Semester Test must be done within 3 working days of the test by emailing the unit convenor and providing documentation to support the deferral application.

Special assessment requirements

Grade determination

The final mark for this subject will be calculated by an accumulation of marks from each assessment item. The final mark for this unit is out of a possible 100 marks. To achieve a passing grade or higher in this subject, students must:

  • Attempt all assessment items;
  • Attend all in-person laboratory sessions;
  • Achieve a combined (weighted) Mid-Semester and End-of-Semester test mark of at least 50%; and
  • Achieve a final aggregate mark of 50% or higher.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Learner engagement

The contact hours for each student in this unit consists of 22 hours of lectures (11 x 2 hrs) and 14 hours of practical classes (7 x 2 hrs). The remaining 114 hours of workload should be distributed across the various assessment tasks and reading of the text.

Participation requirements

Participation in in-person practical classes is a compulsory condition of this unit, and attendance will be recorded electronically. In the event of a missed laboratory class due to an explained absence, please contact the unit convenor as soon as possible with supporting documentation.

Basic knowledge of word processing software.
