The aim of this unit is to enable understanding of how age, gender, culture, socioeconomic status and developmental stages may each influence an individuals exercise capacity and motivation to participate in regular physical activity, and how physical activity, in turn, may influence growth and development.

Learning outcomes

Upon the successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Identify and understand contributing factors to exercise participation and lifestyle choices; and

2. Understand and apply concepts relating to exercise intervention and its impact on growth and development. Specifically: Identify changes in physiological systems (muscular, skeletal neurological and endocrine) across the life span; Identify health-related issues during prenatal development to mother and foetus; Understand the effect of maternal exercise on both mother and foetus during pregnancy; Understand the influence of physical activity across all age groups; Understand the interaction of the systems during development and ageing; Evaluate responses to exercise and training adaptations across the lifespan; Understand the role physical activity plays during ageing and in disease; and Demonstrate an ability to appropriately assess physical fitness in a variety of populations.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

Family holidays and honeymoons are not considered acceptable excuses.

For clarification, one (1) minute past the specified due date and time is considered a late submission.

It is students' responsibility to be familiar with the electronic submission process (eg. the use of Canvas and URKUND). Students are reminded to ensure they plan well ahead by enabling adequate time to submit assessments prior to the deadline, in order to avoid a mark adjustment. If you are concerned about the stability and reliability of your internet  connection, it is recommended you use a student computer in the library when completing quizzes.

Online Quizzes
Students who do not attempt a quiz by the due date will forfeit any marks and receive zero for that quiz. Any quizzes in progress at the due time (3:30pm) will be automatically submitted. Students should ensure they beign their quiz attempt with sufficient time to complete it prior to the due time.

Special assessment requirements

In order to receive a "passing grade" students must achieve the following:

  • attain at least 50% overall

Academic integrity

Cheating, plagiarism, and falsification of data are dishonest practices that contravene academic values. Refer to the University's Student Charter for more information.

To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

This unit will be run remotely due to COVID-19 restrictions. There are no "live lectures" for this unit.

L01 - COVID-19 Remote (Monday 1:30pm-3:30pm)

The unit convenor will be available at this time in the Virtual Room for student consults. No new content will be covered and you do not need to attend this session unless you have specific questions. Depending on demand, a booking system may be introduced and this will be communicated via Canvas. It is suggested that you use this time to work through the recorded content and prepare for tutorials.

Recorded Content

Each topic will have some recorded content in short videos or audio interviews (usually no longer than 20 minutes). On average, you will have 3-5 of these videos per week. You should try to view this material prior to participating in your tutorial for that topic.

Online Tutorials 1-4.

The tutorials for this unit will be conducted remotely using the Virtual Room on Canvas. Tutorials run fortnightly, so please check the weekly pattern on your timetable. Please attend your allocated time to ensure that students are able to receive an appropriate amount of interaction with the tutor. The tutorial notes will contain the activities that will be conducted in class, as well as some self-directed learning activities and formative assessment (e.g. check your knowledge). The goal of the tutorial is to extend your thinking and move to application and critical analysis of content. The tutorials will not be recorded.

Practical Lab 1

The Practical Lab will be held on campus. Due to restrictions around class sizes, the practical lab will have a staggered timetable. You will either attend the lab in the first or second hour of your allocated tutorials time. This will be provided to you via the Canvas page.

Required IT skills

This unit involves online meetings in real time using the Virtual Room in your UCLearn teaching site. The Virtual Room allows you to communicate in real time with your lecturer and other students. To participate verbally, rather than just typing, you will need a microphone. For best audio quality we recommend a microphone and speaker headset. For more information and to test your computer, go to the Virtual Room in your UCLearn site and 'Join Course Room'. This will trigger a tutorial to help familiarise you with the functionality of the virtual room.

It is expected that students will possess UC IT entry skills, allowing them to access the unit's Canvas site.

Email and messaging protocols

Where possible, students with general questions about unit content and assessment should use the discussion forums within Canvas. Please do not ask for assigntment extensions or post specific quesitons about quiz content.

Students using the Canvas discussion forums should expect a reply or confirmation from the unit convenor within 1-2 business days.

  • The email must be sent from your student email account. Correspondence from personal email addresses cannot be responded to.
  • The subject line must include the unit code and the context of your message eg. 8362: Assessment 1 Submission
  • Address the lecturer appropriately by name.
  • State your question or request clearly and concisely.
  • Sign off with your name.
