The aim of this unit is to enable an understanding the relationships between physical activity, sedentary behaviours and lifestyle related diseases. Physical activities role in chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes mellitus, renal disease, dementia and cancers.

Students must display competency in practical skills related to health assessments. Students are also provided the opportunity to critique a related research paper of their own choosing and communicate the findings to a wider audience.

This unit will be co-taught with unit Health, Disease and Exercise G.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Explain exercise interventions as they relate to the prevention and treatment of chronic health conditions;
2. Make judgements regarding the efficacy of physical activity interventions for health;
3. Display competency in the practical skills associated with basic health assessments; and
4. Critique and communicate scientific literature in the area to a lay audience.

Special assessment requirements

In order to pass this unit, students must attempt all assessment items and achieve an overall pass grade in conjunction with passing the competency component of the practical assessment.

A considerable amount of this unit will be online, although many practical skills will be taught and assessed face to face. Students should engage fully in both the face to face as well as online components of this unit.

Please let the unit convenor know if your health may be adversely affected by participating in the practical laboratories or if you answer "yes" to any of the pre-exercise screening questions.

Participation requirements

Lectures and online content
Online content (including lectures) will contain material that is relevant to all assessment items. Announcements and information presented during lectures is deemed to have been made to all students enrolled in the unit. All lectures will be online and available on the unit Canvas site.
 
Laboratory/tutorial classes
Students are expected to engage with all content provided across laboratory/tutorial classes and online activities which are associated with assessment items. Participation/completion in all laboratory/tutorial classes is likely required to pass the unit in line with meeting the unit outcomes. A lower or fail grade may be a consequence of non-engagement/completion as laboratories and tutorials are related to assessment tasks. Students who do not pass the practical component of this subject will not pass the unit.

Additional information

Announcements made at lectures or online tutorials are deemed to be made to the whole group. Information and announcements will also be made on Canvas.
 
Students are expected to participate (face-to-face) in all laboratory-based classes in which practical competencies are addressed. When required, students should dress appropriately for physical activity and act responsibly and safely while completing the assigned tasks. If you do not have appropriate footwear (i.e. closed shoes), you will not be able to attend the laboratory. If any student has reason to believe that they will be unable to participate fully in any of the labs, please confer with the unit convenor prior to the laboratory commencing.
 
In the first practical class with physical activity, students participating will be required to complete an Adult Pre-screening Exercise Tool. This can be found on the unit Canvas site. The pre-screening tool will be covered in detail in the first practical, but if you would like to participate in exercise and are concerned about your capability/potential risk to do so (because of your answers on the pre-exercise screening form) you should seek appropriate medical or health practitioners clearance ahead of time. Please discuss with the unit convenor if you have any concerns. It is asked that if any student has good reason to believe that participation could negatively affect their health, then it is required that they provide this information before participating in an exercise activity.
 
Always keep an electronic and / or hard copy of your assignments. In the rare instance that your original goes astray, you will have a copy. Loss of data prior to submission will not be accepted and penalties will apply.
 
Email protocol
All emails should be sent from your student email account or via Canvas, otherwise anti-spam filters may prevent it from being delivered to your lecturer.
When using email to communicate with lecturers or tutors, you should always make sure that your message contains the following:
  1. A subject that contains the unit code, and clearly describes the nature of your query or request.
    1. Your lecturers receive many emails a day, and may also teach more than one unit, so if your email does not contain the unit code. It is not possible to place your message in context. If the subject does not indicate the nature of the message, it may well remain unanswered.
  2. Change the default setting on your email program to include previous messages in replies, and make sure that previous messages are included in an ongoing exchange. Your lecturer deals with many students. Having a copy of the previous exchanges included in your message will expedite a response. You should still make sure that the subject indicates what the email is about.
  3. Address your lecturer appropriately by name.
  4. State your question or request clearly and concisely.
  5. Insert a signature at the end of your email that contains:
    1. your name in full as it appears in Callista
    2. your student number
Your lecturer will inform you if there are additional requirements for communicating by email. While lecturers cannot be available online all day, in normal circumstance your lecturer will reply within 3 working days.
