This unit will be co-taught with unit 8363 Biochemistry of Exercise G.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this unit students will be able to:1. demonstrate their understanding of basic chemistry, biochemistry and effective laboratory practices;
2. conduct experiments to examine the factors influencing biochemical and genetic principles relating to exercise;
3. describe chemical behaviour of elements and compounds as it relates to exercise, sport and health.

Special assessment requirements
In order to receive a passing grade, students must achieve the following:
- Complete and submit all assessment items.
- If the student obtains a grade lower than 40% in the final exam; the student will only be able to obtain a PASS (50%) overall grade for the unit.
- Attain a minimum cumulative score of 50% for the unit.
Special assessment arrangements can be made for students with extenuating circumstances (must be supported by a medical certificate, evidence from a counsellor or other supporting documentation). You will also be required to submit a completed an extension form to the unit convenor (Dr Naroa Etxebarria - naroa.etxebarria@canberra.edu.au). The Extension form is available on the unit Canvas site. Please note that the Faculty of Health – Discipline of Sport and Exercise Science has a newly enacted policy on Late Submissions, Extensions, and Special Consideration for assessment items that is available on this unit's Canvas site. Students must adhere to this policy. Failure to do so will result in your application being summarily rejected. The unit convenor will determine the revised due date after the submission of appropriate documentation.

Participation requirements
You will be expected to attend and participate in ALL laboratory/tutorial classes, which are associated with the lab manual report assessment item(s). Attendance at laboratory/tutorial classes is essential to meet the unit outcomes. A lower or fail grade may be a consequence of non- attendance, as all practical sessions are highly relevant to the learning and assessment tasks.
Students are required to attend the practical session for which they have been enrolled and if you need to change laboratory/tutorial class groups, written permission from the unit convenor must be obtained.
If you fail to attend any practical sessions, it is the student's responsibility to ensure that they get updated (by peers and colleagues) about the content and procedures worked in the practical sessions.
Required IT skills
All students must have access to a computer that allows them to access email messages on a regular basis and permits access to the internet, if not, students can use University computers to comply with assessment requirements. It is expected all students have the required UC IT entry skills to complete this unit.
In-unit costs
There are no costs associated with this unit other than the purchase of required reading textbook and the laboratory manual (available from the Co-Op bookshop for purchase).
