Combined teaching of undergraduate and graduate Musculoskeletal Functional Anatomy will take place in this unit.
Learning outcomesOn successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Identify musculoskeletal structures of the human body including bones, joints, ligaments, special structures, and deep and superficial muscles (Origin, Insertion, Nerve, Action);
2. Observe and palpate the major surface landmarks of musculoskeletal anatomy;
3. Identify, demonstrate and evaluate all actions of the spine and peripheral joints (movements available - AROM);
4. Identify, demonstrate and evaluate passive range of motion and resisted strength testing of the spine and peripheral joints;
5. Identify both the synergists and antagonists involved in coordinated functional activities of human movement;
6. Provide basic prescription of strength and range of motion exercises.

Advanced Functional Anatomy 8279/8280G. Lab Manual – Musculoskeletal Anatomy. This lab manual is essential. It will be available on Canvas for you to access electronically or to download and print (printing is recommended as you will need to take it into the lab with you).
Note: The descriptions of muscle names, actions, origins, insertions and nerve supply described in this lab manual will be what is required and expected on the lab exam. This information will be provided in the lab manual as well as a 'structures you need to know' list that is also provided on canvas.

Post Practical Quizzes - Canvas
There are 10 quizzes in total. Each weekly submission is worth 2%. Each quiz is due by midnight Sunday of the week it is due. See Canvas for weekly due dates. The quiz content will be related to the information covered in the practice of that week. You must attempt 8 out of 10 of the quizzes to pass the unit. You will not be permitted to attempt a missed quiz unless you have an appropriate reason for extension with evidence. A single attempt will be permitted for each quiz. Answers will be released after the quiz closes.
Special assessment requirements
To pass the unit students must attempt the bone quiz, attempt 8 out of 10 post practical quizzes, attempt both lab exams and gain at least 50% overall in the unit.

Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
Students are expected to follow a weekly routine:
1. Complete the weekly reading
2. Prepare for Lab classes with their Lab Book and structures list
3. Attend Lab classes with the appropriate PPE and a printed Lab Book
4. Attend and participate in practical classes with appropriate clothing
5. Complete the weekly quiz after their practical class
Optional: Attend a Peer Assisted Learning class for study assistance
Inclusion and engagement
If you have registered with Inclusion and Engagement you are encouraged to contact the unit convener early in the semester to ensure that any reasonable adjustments can be put in place.
It is expected that students will listen to them online early in the week prior to coming to the Laboratory session. It is expected that students will attend labs and practicals as there is no other way to have access to this information. If unable to attend a scheduled assessment time during a lab or on-line, students must advise the Unit Convener with appropriate documentation. Announcements made on-line or in a timetabled session (lecture) are deemed to be made to the whole group.
Required IT skills
Students are assumed to have basic IT skills.
Lab coats will be required for all lab sessions. Lab coats can be purchased at the UCU Shop. It is not anticipated that students will have any other additional costs other than those normally accrued in the pursuit of study such as purchase of textbooks and extensive photocopying.
