This unit focuses on the methods used in the synthesis of organic compounds with particular attention to medicinal products and illicit substances. It will integrate the concepts of functional groups and chemical reactions with the processes and techniques in the synthesis of illicit drugs. It will also deal with the issues associated with investigation of clandestine laboratories.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will have:
1. A comprehensive knowledge of the chemical basis of the synthesis of medicinal products and illicit substances. Students should be able to relate their chemical knowledge to the issues confronting investigations of clandestine laboratories. Students should know how to be informed by the available literature and data on the current trends in illicit drug synthesis.

Learner engagement

The 150 hours associated with this unit should be distributed over the trimester teaching period, which is either 12 or 15 weeks; therefore you should be spending on average 10 – 12.5 hours a week on this unit. This time would be used to complete the unit activities (such as module based reading), assessments (such as assignments and/or quizzes) as well as reading and participating in online discussion boards.
