Intro to Medical Laboratory Science (8070.2)

This unit provides the introduction to the Diagnostic Pathology major, and aims to give students a broad overview on the operation and role of the modern pathology laboratory in the health system. The core areas of diagnostic pathology, clinical chemistry, haematology, clinical microbiology, histology and immunoassay (serology), will be examined broadly with a focus on how the individual disciplines interact to provide high quality laboratory diagnosis. This unit is co-taught with unit Introduction to Medical Laboratory Science G.

Learning outcomes

1. Know and demonstrate the broad function and operation of the modern diagnostic pathology laboratory, potential applications and career options;
2. Have strong theoretical and practical skills in the laboratory-based investigation of patients with haematological and biochemical abnormalities;
3. Integrate laboratory results from clinical biochemistry and haematology with other pathology disciplines for enhanced diagnostic outcomes.

Prerequisites

Concepts in Biology; Chemistry 1B and permission of the Course Convener.

Fundamental biology, chemistry, statistical methods, technical writing.
