The unit will provide students with knowledge of the relationship between mental health and disability and the legal system. Students will develop skills in:- problem identification and resolution, and a range of other important skills;- oral and written communication;- teamwork; and - legal research and applicationTopics to be covered in the unit may include capacity; criminal justice and sentencing of mentally ill offenders; mental illness and property; mental disability in minors; and acquired mental disability issues.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the legal system and mental health issues; demonstrate how practical skills such as analysis, research and writing are put to use; demonstrate an ability to apply theoretical knowledge to problem solving; reflect on the social and ethical issues of the relationship between the legal system and mental health.


Prerequisites

Completion of 24 credit points.

Assumed knowledge

Introductory legal subject -although background information about the areas covered will be provided, it is expected that students will be familiar with basic legal principles.
