Learning outcomesOn completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of chemical instrumentation and automation used in clinical chemistry analyses;
2. Be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of analytical instruments and methods of analysis;
3. Select the appropriate methodology and instrumentation and perform some routine chemistry analyses; and
4. Set up a quality assurance program for a routine chemistry laboratory.

The primary textbook for this course is Analytical Chemistry 2.0 by David Harvey which is available online and through the units Canvas Site. Other readings will be available either within the Canvas site or through eReserve.

Submission of assessment items
Extensions & Late submissions
Submission of online quizzes will be on a weekly basis as specified on Canvas.
Lab submission is due at the end of each FTF lab session.
Written tests consisting of Mid Semester Test (MST) and End Semester Test (EST) are due at the end of your lab session (MST) or as specified in time table and on Canvas (EST)
End of Semester Test (FTF/attendance is required); Friday 30 October 2020. Booking is required via Allocate+ (9:30 am session in 02B11 and 13:30 pm session in 02B09).
Special assessment requirements
You must obtain an aggregate mark of 50% to pass this unit.
You must also:
1. Attempt all assessment items.
2. Obtain a minimum mark of 45% in combined Mid Semester Test (MST) and End Semester test (EST)[31.5/70].
3. Meet the minimum participation requirement for laboratories (attending 5 out of 6 FTF lab sessions).
Approximately 22 hours of recorded lectures (11 x 2 hrs), 30 hours of laboratory/tutorial work (10 x 3 hrs), totalling 52 hours. The remaining 98 hours of workload should be distributed across the various assessment tasks.
Participation in FTF laboratory/practical classes is a compulsory condition of this unit, and attendance will be recorded. You must attend at least five out of six FTF lab sessions to pass this unit. In the event that you cannot attend your assigned laboratory class due to illness or unavoidable commitments, contact the Unit Convener as soon as possible. You cannot use data from a laboratory you missed for any of the assessment items. Non-attendance will be recorded as zero in grades.
Required IT skills
The ability to use Internet for online assessment and virtual sessions.
This unit involves online meetings in real time using the Virtual Room in your UCLearn teaching site. The Virtual Room allows you to communicate in real time with your lecturer and other students. To participate verbally, rather than just typing, you will need a microphone. For best audio quality we recommend a microphone and speaker headset. For more information and to test your computer, go to the Virtual Room in your UCLearn site and 'Join Course Room'. This will trigger a tutorial to help familiarise you with the functionality of the virtual room.
You must provide a laboratory coat and safety glasses.
