This unit focuses on understanding the theory and practice of forensic medicine. The content deals with the major causes of natural and unnatural death, the systems of medico-legal investigation and the terminology/descriptions used to describe major causes and types of injury.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Describe the major causes of natural and unnatural death. They will be expected to understand the medico-legal systems of investigation of death and crime. Appreciate the public health remit of forensic medicine and the role, duties and responsibilities of all members of the investigative team.

Extensions & Late submissions

Approval of extenuating circumstances will be dependent upon the production of supporting documentation and at the discretion of the unit convener.

Important: Extensions and acceptance of late submissions for units not delivered by the University of Canberra will follow the rules of the delivering institution, which may be different from the UC rules!

Special assessment requirements

The final mark for this subject will be calculated by an accumulation of marks from each assessment item (as outlined in the assessment strategy). An aggregate mark of 50 % or more is required to pass this unit.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Learner engagement

The 150 hours associated with this unit should be distributed over the trimester teaching period, which is either 12 or 15 weeks; therefore you should be spending on average 10 – 12.5 hours a week on this unit. This time would be used to complete the unit activities (such as module based reading), assessments (such as assignments and/or quizzes) as well as reading and participating in online discussion boards. 

Participation requirements

As this is a fully online unit, participation and engagement in online discussions with your instructor and classmates is an important part of student learning and all students are encouraged to actively engage with this unit. To achieve this, students must participate in the discussion board discussions, providing constructive, interesting, relevant and appropriately prepared posts, and are required to visit the course website daily for important updates and discussion messages. Your participation in online activities will enhance your understanding of the unit content and therefore the quality of your assessment responses. Lack of participation may result in your inability to satisfactorily pass assessment items.
