English 1 is the first of a sequence of English Language units in the University of Canberra College Diploma. The overall aim of this sequence of units is to help students attain a high level of proficiency in English and a firm awareness of the culture that encompasses the language. With this background knowledge and understanding, students will be able to participate much more confidently in life on campus and in the broader Canberra community.
English 1 is a unit that will give students the opportunity to consolidate their knowledge of the essential structures of English, to build up their vocabulary, to develop a range of important study skills and, most importantly, to become more confident in their ability to use English to communicate in both academic and social contexts.
1. Convey meaning in general conversations, make a contribution in university class settings, and be developing the confidence required to communicate in English;
2. Understand conversations, comprehend media broadcasts on current issues in Australian society, and take notes of main ideas;
3. Write paragraphs, short essays and basic reports with reasonable grammatical accuracy using a range of sentence structures and cohesive devices. You also demonstrate an awareness of academic integrity principles and show use of basic referencing conventions in academic writing; and
4. Read and understand passages dealing with most general units, and apply reading strategies needed for successfully understanding academic texts, research, and access information electronically.
