This unit is a core unit in the Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Master of Counselling and prepares students to do their clinical placement (unit 7748 Placement and Supervision). It is desirable that students have completed most of the counselling units, in particular 7743 (Skills and Models) and 7744 (Theories).

All Assignments in this unit are graded. In order to pass this unit, all assignments must be submittedm, you must pass all assessment items and an overall mark of 50% or more must be reached.
This is a professional training and skills based unit. It is intended that learning in this unit will be interactive and practical. It is presumed therefore that students have made adequate arrangements for attending all teaching-learning sessions (including lectures and tutorials). The Graduate Diploma and Master of Counselling have been designed to meet the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) accreditation requirements, which include 200 hours face to face learning. Attendance at lectures and tutorials is essential in this course as students will not be able to attain and demonstrate, in their assessments, the learning outcomes, unless they attend and fully participate in the workshops and tutorials. In particular, absence from more than two tutorials will seriously jeopardise a student's ability to achieve and demonstrate the set learning outcomes. Students are also required to inform their lecturer/tutors of their absence if unavoidable and to seek consultation.
In addition attendance is required to meet professional accreditation requirements.
Required IT skills
You must be able to word process assessments so that they are well presented, search the library data bases for relevant journal articles and access the UCLearn site. It is the individual student's responsibility to access appropriate help from the university ITC services or the library if he or she does not have adequate skills.
Work placement, internships or practicums
This unit provides preparation for 7748 Counselling Placement and Supervision offered in the first semester.
