Students will undertake a supervised counselling placement in an approved agency, and attend field seminars on professional issues and participate in small group supervision of their counselling practice on campus.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Apply their theoretical knowledge and counselling skills to practice with clients in a counselling agency;
2. Analyse the influence of organisational and social contexts on counselling practice;
3. Analyse and critique their use of counselling skills and theoretical interventions;
4. Demonstrate their capacity to participate in small group supervision of their practice; and
5. Demonstrate ethical decision making about their counselling practice.

Admission to the Graduate Diploma in Counselling OR Master of Counselling OR Permission of the Course Convener.

There will be agency policies and procedures and other policy documents and resources relevant to the client populations that you will need to access and become familiar with, as part of the orientation to placement. You will need to undertake research specific to your placement agency for assessments.

This is an ungraded unit and all assignments in this unit will be marked pass/fail.

In order to pass this unit, all assignments must be submitted and each receive a pass mark.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

The Graduate Diploma and Master of Counselling have been designed to meet the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) accreditation requirements, which include 200 hours face to face learning. This translates to at least an 80% attendance in each unit. It is expected that students will attend all sessions unless prevented by illness or other unforeseen situations. In these circumstances students should notify the lecturer in advance where possible.  In order to meet the required professional and educational standards students must discuss catchup work with the lecturer when two sessions have been missed. 

The Friday workshop is a crucial session. It sets up the group, agreements/rules and is unable to be made up in any other replacement work. Please do not enrol if you cannot attend this half day workshop and discuss with Unit Convenor/Course convenor.

Required IT skills

You must be able to word process assessments so that they are well presented, search the library data bases for relevant journal articles and access the UCLearn site for this unit. It is the individual student's responsibility to access appropriate help from the university IT services or the library if they do not have adequate skills.

Work placement, internships or practicums

This unit involves  clinical placement  and therefore, additional student responsibilities are required. Work-place learning requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics. Client confidentiality must always be maintained, including for assessment items such as reports or essays. The professional nature of this unit also requires 100% participation at all learning activities (workshop, supervision groups as scheduled – see section 3) for the successful completion of this unit (also see section 6c). If attendance requirements cannot be satisfied (e.g. timetable clash), it is recommended that you meet with your Course Convener to schedule this unit for a future semester.

Please note students are required to undergo a Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) background check and Police Check to undertake a placement for this unit.

Note that the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act only applies to the ACT. For students undertaking placements in other states or territories, it may be that a Police Check or a Working with Children Check is required.
