This capstone unit requires students to complete a major information systems project. Students are to demonstrate a capacity to work in the computing field at a professional level. Students are expected to manage their resources to initiate, plan, estimate, and carry out an information systems project accordance with appropriate standards. Emphasis is placed on the practice of professional project management and development methodologies, systems change management, subsequent operational service management and outcomes evaluation. Students will, from a professional perspective, consider the shape of the Information sector of the economy, the Skills Framework for the Information Age and careers as well as a range of general issues in the social, legal and ethical environment of systems and their development .

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Work in a team to define, document and implement a small project, and ensure the quality of the project;
2. Demonstrate mastery of project management and system design related theories;
3. Elicit and analyse requirements for fitness for purpose as well as adherence to business objectives and clients' organisational and system environment;
4. Prepare realistic project plans, and identify, assess and manage risks. Monitor project progress, manage project changes, and carry out project closure and review; and
5. Incorporate and evaluate socio-legal-ethical concerns when choosing, analysing, and building an information system.

Student groups

Students will work in groups on real world projects in 7164 IT Project.  Group size is a little dependent on the nature of the project selected, but most groups are 3 to 5 students. It is best if there are a suitable mix of skills in each of the project groups.

B1 Moderation of group marks

In order to recognise the contributions of individual members in a team environment, the following process will apply:

  1. The following assessment items are team based and will be marked for the whole team: assignment A1 – project proposal and plan (20%), assignment A3 – project status reports (10%), assignment A5 – oral presentation and product demo (20%), assignment A6 - project closure report (20%). These account for 70% of the total marks of the unit.
  2. 50% of the team based marks will be adjusted based on the percentage contribution of each member from the peer review report of the final assignment.

For example, if a team has 3 members and it achieved 50 (out of 70) in the team based assessment items, and the contributions of the team members are 30%, 30% and 40% (based on the peer review report of the final assignment). The marks for the team based assessment items for each student will be as follow:

  1. For the two students whose contributions are 30%, their moderated team based mark will be 47.5 (25+25*3*30/100).
  2. For the student whose contribution is 40%, her moderated team based mark will be 55 (25+25*3*40/100).

Special assessment requirements

In order to pass this unit, students have to obtain a mark of 50% or greater for the assessment as a whole. Higher grades will be awarded on the basis of the total mark being ≥ 65% for a credit, ≥ 75% for a distinction and ≥ 85% for a high distinction. Some scaling of marks and academic judgement may be applied to determine students' final grades - in this process no student will be disadvantaged.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

The professional nature of this unit requires active participation and group work for all learning activities for the successful completion of this unit. If attendance and group work requirements cannot be satisfied, it is recommended that the student meet with their Unit Convener to schedule this unit for a future semester.
