Submission of assessment items
Extensions & Late submissions
Extensions
1. Assessment extensions will only be granted in exceptional circumstances. Given that the reflective discussion posts are designed to engage the students in the content as it is being learned, there will be no extensions for the reflective discussion posts.
2. Students are expected to work on the assessment items throughout the teaching period. Early communication of problems is strongly advised. Students should assess within the first few weeks of semester whether they have a reasonable likelihood of being able to complete the unit and should consider withdrawing by the census date if required.
3. To request an extension, as applicable for an assessment item, email the unit convener from your university email account with the following:
Subject line should include:
- unit number
- assessment item name
- extension request
Message body should include:
- your first name, surname, and student ID
- unit number and name
- assessment item name
- length of extension requested
- reason for the extension request
Attachments including an Assignment Extension Form and supporting documentary evidence, for example:
- A medical certificate signed by a registered medical, dental, or health practitioner. The certificate must contain the registered provider number, the duration of the student's incapacity to study, and the date of consultation.
- A death notice or other appropriate documentation for bereavement.
4. The unit convener will consider the request and send an email reply to advise the outcome. If approved, the new due date and time will appear in Canvas.
Late penalty
1. Any assessment item submitted late without an approved extension will incur a 5% penalty per day (i.e., -5% of total marks available for the assessment item), including weekends. A part-day late is counted as a full day late.
2. Assessment can be submitted up to 7 days late; if submitted beyond 7 days late, 0 will be awarded for the assessment item.
Marking and feedback
1. Assessment items will be marked within three weeks of submission.
2. Availability of marks and feedback will be notified via Canvas Announcements.
3. Assessments submitted after the due date and time, regardless of whether an extension was granted, may be returned at a later date than those submitted on time.
4. Late submission may result in reduced feedback being provided.
Special assessment requirements
In order to pass this unit students must attempt the Week 5 online exam, essay and Week 13 final assessment, and achieve an overall mark of at least 50% averaged across all assessment items.
Academic integrity
Students have a responsibility to uphold University standards on ethical scholarship. Good scholarship involves building on the work of others and use of others' work must be acknowledged with proper attribution made. Cheating, plagiarism, and falsification of data are dishonest practices that contravene academic values. Refer to the University's Student Charter for more information.
To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.
Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
Participation requirements
Students are expected to attend all lectures (or access the lecture recordings) and tutorials. Note that all tutorials are held in real time.
Required IT skills
Students are expected to have basic IT skills in order to navigate Canvas. Regular access to Canvas is a requirement for students enrolled in this unit to enable access to announcements, discussion forums, online exam/assessment, and for online submission of assignments.
Live online lectures and tutorials use the Blackboard Collaborate tool via Canvas in real time. Blackboard Collaborate provides a virtual classroom or meeting room where you can communicate in real time with your convener/tutor and other students.
In-unit costs
Not applicable. All readings available via the reading list on Canvas.
Work placement, internships or practicums
None.
Additional information
Announcements made via lectures and/or Canvas will be deemed to have been received by all students in the unit.
Communication with staff and fellow students via Discussion Forums
During this course, you have the opportunity to engage in reflective discussion boards via Canvas. Please be respectful to all participating in the forums by ensuring that you use appropriate forms of communication. For example, we discourage the use of ‘text talk' and instead encourage the use of prose – that is, full sentences using appropriate grammar and spelling.
Email communication
The Unit Convenor receives numerous emails each day. To assist with providing a timely response to all student queries, please assess the following before emailing:
a) Can the question be addressed via Canvas?
b) Is the Unit Convenor the appropriate person to contact?
c) Is the information provided in the unit outline?
If the Unit Convenor is the most appropriate person to contact then please email from your university email address and include P&ID2022 in the subject line.
