This subject will introduce students to the uses and purposes of groups in community settings and develop in students an understanding of different types of groups and their functions. Learning will include the dynamics and processes of group membership, group leadership and decision making in groups. Groups with an educational, therapeutic, mediation, dispute resolution or support focus will be explored.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

2. Discuss the basic procedures for setting up groups in a variety of contexts; and

Assessment items will be submitted online via UCLearn.

Written parts of assignments must be submitted in the required format, 1.5 to double spaced with page numbers on each page.

All Assignments in this unit are graded. In order to pass this unit, all assignments must be submitted and an overall mark of 50% or more must be reached. 

Responsibility for Understanding

If there is any doubt with regard to the requirements of any particular assignments or assessment procedure, the onus for clarifying the issue rests with the student who should contact the unit convener or tutor.  Further, it is the responsibility of students to ensure that they are correctly enrolled in the unit and that the tutor and Student Administration have their correct contact details.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Moderation: Some assessments will be moderated, as per the School and Faculty Moderation Procedures.

Learner engagement

In order to get the most out of your studies, it is strongly recommended that you plan your time commitments, actively engage in class discussions (online or face-to-face) and work with your peers as part of your study. The amount of time you will need to spend on study in this unit will depend on a number of factors including your prior knowledge, learning skill level and learning style. Nevertheless, in planning your time commitments you should note that for a 3 credit point unit the total notional workload over the semester or term is assumed to be 150 hours. The total workload for units of different credit point value should vary proportionally. For example, for a 6 credit point unit the total notional workload over a semester or term is assumed to be 300 hours. 

Participation requirements

Groupwork is a skills-based unit which requires interactive and practical participation.  Students need to have made adequate arrangements for attending all teaching-learning tutorial sessions. If you foresee not being able to participate in all tutorials, then consider enrolling in this unit on another occasion when this is possible.

Effective and satisfactory participation means:

  • demonstration of preparation for the session through reading and critical thinking;
  • willingness to share ideas, resources and facilitate others learning;
  • active participation in practical exercises, role-plays, simulations, etc;
  • constructive interaction with group members through honest disclosures and respectful listening; and
  • readiness to adopt and justify a reasoned personal position on issues that arise.

The required active participation includes co-leading group practice, participation as an active group member and contribution to the evaluation of the group-leading done by fellow students. 

You must speak directly to your tutor and co-leader, giving at least 48 hrs notice to postpone your tute presentation and only on the grounds of medical or other exceptional personal circumstances with the support of appropriate medical documentation.

Required IT skills

You must be able to word process assessments so that they are well presented, search the library data bases for relevant journal articles and access the UCLearn Web site for this unit. It is the individual student's responsibility to access appropriate help from the university IT services or the library if he or she does not have adequate skills. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with any audio-visual aids and their operation well prior to their presentations.
