Band 3 2021 (Commenced Before 1 Jan 2021)
This unit deals with the selected areas of sports medicine that have relevance for individuals involved in physical activity programs. Topics covered include fundamentals of inflammation and healing in tissue, mechanisms of injury in sport (emphasising trauma and overuse), prevention and management of injuries, the importance of prehabilitation, strapping and taping techniques, drugs in sport and managing the athlete who is asthmatic, diabetic or epileptic. Emphasis is on a practical context with relevance to emergency care and clinical applications such as surface anatomy and the anatomical basis of common injuries. As such it is a requirement of the unit that students attain a current nationally recognised First Aid and resuscitation certification.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Review and evaluate the primary responsibilities that working as part of a multidisciplinary team has in preventing sports injuries and providing initial care for athletes who are injured;

Submission of assessment items

Special assessment requirements

All Assessment items must be attempted before a student is eligible for a passing grade.  An overall mark of 50% must be achieved to successfully pass the unit.

The on-campus practical sessions and face-to-face lectures also contribute to external certificate qualification. Should a student not attain the required level of attendance (all practical sessions and 2 lectures), they will not be eligible to apply for recognition of prior learning for Sports Trainer Level 1 certification and Advanced Sports Taping with Sports Medicine Australia.

Use of GenAI: Guided - Students will be guided in how GenAI must/may be used in completing the assessment as detailed in the unit outline and assessment instructions. More detailed information can be found at GenAI and Assessment at UC

The ethical use of GenAI is permitted to support preparation for the Group Video Assignment, but must not replace students' own critical thinking or interpretation of evidence.

Acceptable uses include:

  • Clarifying assessment instructions
  • Creating an assignment checklist
  • Brainstorming video ideas
  • Story boarding video structure

Applying for Deferred Exams

As stated in University Policy, you must request approval from the Unit Convenor to sit a deferred examination. You must apply for an exam deferral within a reasonable timeframe (within three days of the missed assessment). Your application must include the relevant documentary evidence according to the category of extenuating circumstance under which you are applying (i.e., a medical certificate, death notice).

You are NOT permitted to defer a deferred exam. A student who does not attempt a deferred exam will receive a grade of zero for the assessment task.

For further information regarding accepted extenuating circumstances and documentary evidence required, please see Assessment Procedures (https://www.canberra.edu.au/Policies/PolicyProcedure/Index/1607).

Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at UC. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.

Academic integrity involves the ethical, honest and responsible use, creation and sharing of information. It is critical to the quality of higher education. Our academic integrity values are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage.

UC students have to complete the Academic Integrity Module annually to learn about academic integrity and to understand the consequences of academic integrity breaches (or academic misconduct).

UC uses various strategies and systems, including detection software, to identify potential breaches of academic integrity. Suspected breaches may be investigated, and action can be taken when misconduct is found to have occurred.

Information is provided in the Academic Integrity Policy, Academic Integrity Procedure, and University of Canberra (Student Conduct) Rules 2023. For further advice, visit Study Skills.

Students should engage fully in both face to face as well as online components of this unit.

It is strongly advised that student attend professional lectures in weeks 10, 11 and 12.

Participation requirements

Lectures

Lectures will contain material that is relevant to all assessment items. Announcements and information presented during lectures is deemed to have been made to all students enrolled in the unit.  All lectures will be recorded and available on the unit Canvas site.

Practical classes

Students are expected to attend and participate in all practical classes. External certificates have requirements that students spend a nominated number of hours in practice of specific sports medicine skills.  Attendance means that the student is participating fully in the activity of the day.  All scheduled practical sessions contribute to external certificates and to the basic competency expected of students passing this unit.  Should a student not attain the required level of attendance, they will be ineligible to apply for the relevant external certificate.  It is the student's responsibility to ensure that their attendance at practical classes is recorded correctly.

Students are required to attend and complete competency assessment in the practical class for which they have been allocated.  If you have exceptional circumstances and need to change practical class groups then you must seek permission from the unit convenor beforehand.  External accrediting bodies have limits on the size of the practical group.

Required IT skills

It is expected that students will possess UC IT entry skills, allowing them to access the unit's Canvas site and install and operate Respondus LockDown Browser for assessments.

In-unit costs

Students choosing to attain external certification from Sports Medicine Australia (Sports Trainer Level 1 & Advanced Sports Taping) will be required to pay the administrative costs of their registration directly to the external body ($99 for Sports Trainer lvl1, $49 for Taping).

Students will be required to purchace their own taping supplies for practice. Packages may be available on campus courtousy of the Student Led Association of Physiotherapy (detailed will be provided on Canvas)

Work placement, internships or practicums
