There are many biomechanics textbooks available that will contain chapters similar to the topics that are covered over the course of the semester. Such texts are likely to supplement and support your learning. As such, although not a requirement of the unit, students are encouraged to engage with any additional readings or texts that assist understanding of the subject matter. The below two texts are recommended for students of 6834 as they are clear and provide easy to understand examples:
- McGuinness, P.M. Biomechanics of Sport and Exercise (3rd Edition) Human Kinetics.
- Hall, S.J. Basic Biomechanics (2006). Boston: McGraw-Hill.
Both texts are avaiable for purchase on the School Locker website and available for short loan at the Library.
Submission of assessment items
Special assessment requirements
Students are required to achieve an overall unit grade of 50% to pass the unit.
Students have a responsibility to uphold University standards on ethical scholarship. Good scholarship involves building on the work of others and use of others' work must be acknowledged with proper attribution made. Cheating, plagiarism, and falsification of data are dishonest practices that contravene academic values. Refer to the University's Student Charter for more information.
To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.
Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
All grades for each assessment item will be moderated in accordance with the Faculty of Health moderation policy.
All lectures will be available to students online. Students should view weekly lectures in order to stay on top of unit content and be able to complete assessment items. Pre-prac videos will be available to students online, students should view these and related lecture content prior to attending the subsequent practical intensives. On-campus attendance is expected for practical classes and is associated with formal grading for this unit. Tutorials will also be conducted on-campus and are designed to consolidate lecture and practical content, as such, attendance is strongly recommended. In particular, attendance is recommended for the first tutorial in Week 1 to form groups for HMA Part A.
This unit is Peer-Assisted Learning Session (PALS) supported unit. Participation in PALS weekly group study sessions are recommended for Biomechanics 1 students. These sessions are free of charge and led by Peer Learning Advisors who are students that have successfully completed the unit.
Required IT skills
Competency using word processing, spreadsheet based software (i.e. Excel) and presentation software (e.g. PowerPoint) is required. In addition, students will be required to search relevant databases for research articles.
Students will also be required to use a video analysis software package. There are freeware options for PCs and software available on University Computers. Please note if you use a Mac you will need to have access to a Windows computer to be able to download the required motion analysis software. More details will be placed on Canvas.
Students will be required to purchase a Prac Manual which contains all of the practical and tutorial content for this unit. This prac manual is available for purchase from the UC Shop, please ensure you have this prior to attending the first practical intensive in Week 3.
Work placement, internships or practicums
Additional readings will be provided across the course of the unit to supplement and assist in your understanding. These readings are assessable material. As such it is necessary that these readings are completed to ensure understanding is maximised.
CONTACTING THE UNIT CONVENOR
Students with general questions about the unit content and assessment should use the discussion forums on the unit Canvas site. Students that post to the discussion forum should expect a reply or confirmation from the unit convenor within 1-2 business days.
It is also strongly encouraged that students attend the tutorial sessions on Thursdays 12-2pm. These will provide an opportunity for students to ask questions and discuss the unit content and assessment items.
If students do need to send an email:
- The email must be sent from the student's UC email account. Correspondence from personal email addresses cannot be responded to.
- The subject line must include the unit code and context of the message (e.g. 10156 Assessment 1)
- The student must address the unit convenor appropriately by name
- The question or request should be stated clearly and concisely
- The student should sign off with their full name and student ID number.
Emails that don't comply with these conventions will not receive a reply. Students can expect a response via email within 3-4 business days.
