This unit covers the production of a student's research proposal for their thesis in their degree. It is centered specifically on the student's research project and examines the literature, knowledge gaps, topic formulation, research methodology and plan.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Assess research articles in the related study field.
2. Formulate a research topic in the related study field.
3. Develop a research plan at a higher degree level, including literature review, research question formalisation, and research methodology.
4. Demonstrate a capacity in both writing and oral presentation an advanced technical report.

The unit convenor reserves the right to question students on any of their submitted work for moderation and academic integrity purposes.

An aggregate mark of 50% is required to pass the unit.

The final grade of a student is determined according to the following table:

85 <= the aggregate mark <= 100

Final grade = HD

75 <=the aggregate mark < 85

Final grade = DI

65 <= the aggregate mark < 75

Final grade = CR

50 <=the aggregate mark < 65

Final grade = P

the aggregate mark < 50

Final grade = FAIL (NX, NC, or NN)

Participation requirements

In addition to the workshops, each student is expected to have a 1-hour per fortnight meeting with their thesis supervisors.
