This unit provides a gentle introduction to the usage of modern information and communications technology in the workplace. Through specific examples, taken from real-world problems, the unit explores how Information and Communications Technology (ICT) can enable service-oriented aspects in different domains. This involves an understanding of basics of how computer systems and network systems work, a contextualization of the provision and receiving of ICT-enabled services, the use of system and application software including desktop processing software, an understanding of aspects of computer security and computer administration, the use of Web 2.0 technology, an understanding of concepts of mobile computing and communications technology, importance of different open source and proprietary IT solutions, and knowing the benefits of cloud computing based application software for workplace. This unit will be co-taught with unit 8520 Information Technology for the Workplace G.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a sound understanding of, and have gained hands-on experience in, how computer systems work and how they connect to the network at the workplace and the internet;
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the day-to-day aspects of computer security;
3. Use application software, including desktop processing software, (For e.g.Office Productivity Software Suite);
4. Set up a website and to use Web 2.0 technology (blogs, wiki, file/data sharing);
5. Show an understanding of concepts on contemporary mobile computing and communication;
6. Computer administration tasks;
7. Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between proprietary and open source IT solutions; and
8. Recognise the benefits of different cloud computing application software for workplace.

Submission of assessment items

Grade Calculation

The final unit mark will be calculated by adding together the weighted scores of all assessment items (see section 5 for assessment items and weightings).

Normally a final unit mark ≥ 50 is required to pass the unit. For this unit, in addition to this requirement, a score of at least 40% on the final assessment is required to pass the unit.

  1. Students whose final assessment score is ≥ 40% will receive a final grade as determined according to the final unit mark according to the university grading schema.
  2. Students whose final assessment score is <40% will receive a final grade of NX (Fail), regardless of the final unit mark. This means that if you have failed the final assessment, you will fail the unit, even if your final unit mark would normally otherwise indicate that you have passed. 
  3. Students who do not participate in the final assessment will receive a final grade of NC (Not Complete), regardless of the final unit mark.
  4. Students who do not participate in any assessment items will receive a final grade of NN (Non-participation)

The unit convener reserves the right to question students on any of their submitted work and may adjust awarded marks based on this questioning.

Participation requirements

Your participation in online activities will enhance your understanding of the unit content and therefore the quality of your assessment responses. Lack of participation may result in your inability to satisfactorily pass assessment items.

As described in detail in 5b, A score of at least 40% on the final assessment is required to pass the unit.

Required IT skills

Ability to use a computer, including managing files, running programs, and browsing the internet.

This unit involves online meetings in real time using the Virtual Room in your UCLearn teaching site. The Virtual Room allows you to communicate in real time with your lecturer and other students. To participate verbally, rather than just typing, you will need a microphone. For best audio quality we recommend a microphone and speaker headset. For more information and to test your computer, go to the Virtual Room in your UCLearn site and 'Join Course Room'. This will trigger a tutorial to help familiarise you with the functionality of the virtual room.

Information for the group:
All students are expected to regularly (at least weekly) check the unit's website for announcements. Regular checking of UC student email accounts is also essential, with the assumption that students will read emails received there on a weekly basis. Announcements made on the Canvas site or circulated via email to UC student accounts will be considered communicated to the entire class.
