This is a problem oriented subject, which requires students to learn and apply various financial concepts and tools for typical financial decision making by business enterprises. This subject aims to develop a working knowledge of the concepts, tools and applications of corporate financial decision-making within the framework of maximizing shareholder wealth. It introduces students to a range of financial decision making concepts such as financial goals, time value of money, risk and return analysis, asset pricing, capital budgeting, cost of capital, capital structure, and dividend policies.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Explain the goals of financial management of a firm and basic finance principles, including the time value of money concepts, risk-return relationship, efficient market and portfolio diversification;
2. Differentiate and explain theories and models used in investment, financing and dividend decisions;
3. Select and apply appropriate models and techniques to solve problems relating to the valuation of shares and bonds, alternative capital investment proposals, and to calculate cost of capital; and
4. Apply capital structure theories and dividend policies to solve problems involving financing and dividend decisions.

Accounting for Managers. It is recommended that students complete Business Statistics before enrolling in this unit.

Special assessment requirements

In order to pass this unit, a student has to obtain at least 50% of the available unit marks and appear in the final exam.

  • Please note if you fail to submit/ complete any assessment item other than the exam, you will be awarded zero mark for that item, and if you did not sit the exam, you will be awarded a fail grade of NC (failed – incomplete assessment) irrespective of your overall score in the unit.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

It is recommended that students attend all lectures and tutorials. However there is no mark for attendance.

Attendance is not compulsory, but the unit has been designed on the assumption of face-to-face delivery and learning principles and so students who do not attend regular classes will be disadvantaged in terms of learning and feedback. Students need to participate and perform in an online quiz to gain 10% marks of the total marks of the unit as detailed in the assessment item 1. 

Required IT skills

You are assumed to have adequate skills in the use of calculator, computer, word-processing, spreadsheet modelling and internet browsing. You are also assumed to be familiar with LearnOnline. If you feel you do not have adequate skills, please discuss the matter with the unit convener.

Work placement, internships or practicums
