This unit is designed to equip students who have little or no knowledge of economics with a clear and up-to-date commentary of the economy. The topics covered will provide all the information necessary to enable discussion of government policy, international trade, the financial sector, and the economy's main industries (agriculture, manufacturing, mining and services).

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Students will gain a good foundation for understanding how economies operate;
2. How businesses use economics in their decision making, and why governments implement certain economic policies. These include policies on unemployment, inflation, interest rates, and the environment; and
3. This unit also looks at Australia’s place in the world economy, covering issues such as international trade, exchange rates, and foreign debt.

Students need to get an overall mark of 50% to pass the unit.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
