The subject aims to introduce to students a broad range of management issues and experiences faced by managers in modern organisations. It relies strongly on a case study approach to learning to equip students with knowledge and skills which they can apply to fluid and often, ambiguous, work environments.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Be able to understand the principal historical and current approaches to the study of management;
2. Apply the various theories of management to particular management situations;
3. Understand the tasks and competencies required in the practice of management;
4. Comprehend the range of complicating factors which prevent the study of management from ever becoming an exact science; and
5. Demonstrate basic competencies in the written and oral presentation of academic work.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

There is no requirement for tutors to mark assessment items that are submitted late. However in this unit the following practice will be followed. Late assessment which is submitted within 7 days of the specified submission date and time will be accepted for marking. However, 5% of the total marks allocated for that item of assessment will be deducted for each day the assessment is overdue. Late assessment submitted more than 7 days after the prescribed date and time may not be marked. In this case a student will not receive any marks for the relevant piece of assessment.

If for any reason you are unable to do an assignment by the due date you must submit, to the UCC Reception, a request for an extension in writing before the due date (unless impossible) setting out in detail the genuine and exceptional reason for requesting the extension.  If there is a medical or counselling reason for the extension request it must be accompanied by a medical or counselling certificate which clearly states:

  • that you were unfit to complete the assignment;
  • the date of the medical or counselling consultation; and
  • the period for which you were / are / will be unfit to complete the assignment.

Special assessment requirements

To pass this unit students MUST attempt the final exam and obtain at least overall 50% of the total mark.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

In this unit there are three (3) classes per week: one lecture (1.5 hours), one tutorial (1.5 hours) and one workshop (2 hours). All classes are compulsory for all students. Students who have less than 80% attendance rate across all classes will be identified as 'at risk' students who have a high chance of failing the unit.
