Communication, Change and Innovation G (12336.1)

This unit supports students to gain an informed critical perspective on changes that have affected the field of media and communication, while supporting the development of capacities to reflect on the implications of emergent developments for industries, professionals and publics. Through engaging with unit content and assessment tasks, students will develop their critical understanding of both the concept and practices of media innovation, and critically engage with and assess particular examples of innovation that have affected the field. The unit engages with multiple dimensions and examples of media innovation, drawing on expertise from the University of Canberra's News and Media Research Centre. In considering examples of media innovation, students will critically consider their importance and potential, how and why particular innovations come to be pursued and adopted by different actors, and the actual and potential consequences of innovation in the context of a continually changing field of media and communication industries and user practices.
