This microcredential introduces students to the principles of trauma-informed theory and practice with a focus on their application in the community setting. Students will explore the social, cultural and personal factors that contribute to experiences of trauma, loss and grief and examine culturally responsive approaches to support diverse individuals. Students will learn practical strategies to build trust, strengthen relationships and create inclusive environments that reduce barriers, re-traumatisation and promote resilience when supporting individuals and communities affected by trauma.
Enrolment is restricted to Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614 staff, volunteers and nominated participants, and not open to the general student population.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Describe and reflect on the theories, factors and core principles of trauma-informed care; and
2. Demonstrate trauma-informed communication and support strategies when engaging with individuals in community settings.
