Students will be introduced to the theoretical and practical elements of the communication and mediation relationship. You will be equipped with essential skills to engage, support, and mediate effectively with individuals and communities facing vulnerability. Through a blend of practical techniques and reflective practice, students will learn how to apply trauma-informed, culturally responsive communication strategies and facilitate conflict resolution in complex, high-stakes environments.
Enrolment is restricted to Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614 staff, volunteers and nominated participants, and not open to the general student population.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate culturally sensitive and trauma-informed communication techniques to engage effectively with individuals from at-risk populations; and
2. Facilitate conflict resolution and mediation processes that promote safety, trust and empowerment with vulnerable communities.
