Students will trace the history of the Salvation Army from the establishment of the Christian Mission in 1865, to the global creation of The Salvation Army 614, and the Australian division Melbourne Project 614. The Salvation Army 614 culture will be discussed with students taken through case studies and real-world applications to gain an in-depth understanding of the organisations values and business model. The workings of The Salvation Army 614 will be explored to prepare students to work and volunteer with and support marginalised groups.
Enrolment is restricted to Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614 staff, volunteers and nominated participants, and not open to the general student population

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Describe and reflect on The Salvation Army as an evolving organisation and how their focus on social justice has shaped the organisation today; and
2. Examine how the culture and values of The Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614 underpin their everyday operations supporting marginalised people.
