Nutrition and Dietetics Practicum (Part A) PG (12240.1)

This unit prepares students for professional dietetics practice through hands-on learning in real-world settings. Students complete 24 weeks of Work Integrated Learning (WIL). 20 weeks is supervised WIL where students apply a socioecological approach to health, address major health priorities and navigate the broad landscape of dietetics. This includes policy development and the provision of services and care to individuals, groups, communities and / or populations. A course e-portfolio of learning evidence is submitted to demonstrate professional, expert, evidence-based and collaborative practice as described by the Dietitians Australia National Competency Standards. The final 4 weeks is a mentored WIL experience where students engage in new and emerging areas of practice, consolidate learning, build professional networks, and transition to the workforce. This unit ensures students are ready to be credentialled as a dietitian in Australia.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
1. Critically evaluate their own professional practice against the Dietitian Australia¿s National Competency Standards enabling cultural responsiveness, lifelong learning, excellence of practice, and advocacy for profession;
2. Co-design, execute and evaluate nutrition interventions, that positively influence food systems and the health of individuals, groups and /or populations to achieve nutrition outcomes;
3. Apply critical thinking and evidenced based practice to inform their dietetics practice including
research and quality improvement projects, and
4. Communicate and collaborate with persons and care/service partners effectively and professionally to improve nutrition and health outcomes in a range of settings.
