In this unit, you will report from the field as a student journalist for The Owl and UCFM. In practical, real-world contexts you will evolve your multimedia content production skills, and develop your professional identity and confidence. In researching your stories, you will draw information from ¿official¿ sources as well as from everyday members of your community, considering how to use both to produce credible stories that inform your audience. Just as importantly, you will build foundational knowledge about legal and ethical frameworks that govern journalistic practice and apply that knowledge in your reporting.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Produce accurate and trustworthy reporting from the field, gathering and thoughtfully using information from ¿official¿ sources;
2. Create engaging multimedia stories about people and issues in the community, centred around substantial interviews;
3. Critically reflect on the public interest role of journalism and its relationship with power; and
4. Apply the theoretical and regulatory underpinnings of journalistic practice, such as ethics and law.
