The unit explores the complex history of social work globally, regionally (Asia-Pacific), and in Australia and at the local State/Territory levels. Students will critically analyse social work's place, purpose, and fields of practice. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and their implications for social work practice will be examined. Social work's relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander is explored and critiqued. Students will develop skills in networking with Indigenous communities and acknowledge, respect, listen, follow, and consult.
1. Identify and critique social work¿s place, purpose and practices;
2. Appraise and translate the Sustainable Development Goals into social work practice; and
3. Demonstrate and apply understandings of the history and present experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia and how Social Work can actively collaboratively learn with and from First Nations' experiences and knowledges to decolonise practices.
