This unit introduces students to theories and research related to human development in early childhood from conception to five years. Students will explore physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional development and how growth and development are interrelated and dynamic. Students will critically engage with and reflect on traditional and contemporary developmental theories. There is a focus on how adults can optimise children's development through their interactions in teaching and caregiving.
1. Describe key aspects of physical, cognitive, social and emotional and language development through conception to five years;
2. Explain young children's behaviours and development according to different theories; and
3. Present knowledge and ideas about children's development effectively with parents, colleagues and health professionals.
