Using a woman-centred approach this unit draws on midwifery, medical, pharmacological and other theory and research to develop students' midwifery knowledge and skills to assist women who are experiencing complexity during pregnancy. This unit will assist students to form useful midwifery relationships with women during pregnancy when they require extra midwifery and medical care. Midwifery understanding gained in this unit will be applied to the corresponding practical unit.
1. Demonstrate an understanding of midwifery, medical, pharmacological and other theory as it applies to the provision of care for pregnant women and/or unborn babies experiencing complexity;
2. Demonstrate an understanding of effective communication in the context of complexity between midwives and childbearing women and their families, and other health professionals; and
3. Appraise research findings in the context of complexity.
