Weekly readings will be provided via the UC Library Readings List, which will be available through the CANVAS course.

A key text for this unit is:

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

Note. When developing your lesson plans, it is encouraged that you are using your skills in lesson planning and design to create engaging and rich lesson resources. Using materials from commercial sites such as TPT, Twinkl, Sparkle Box etc. is not desirable in this unit. If you adapt resources from commercial sites and sources, please note this in your lesson planning and resource development.

Approval of extenuating circumstances will be dependent upon the production of supporting documentation and at the discretion of the unit convener.

All assessment items required to be submitted online must be submitted via the appropriate Canvas drop box. It is the student's responsibility to upload the correct and corresponding draft or assessment item to the right submission section. Assignments must be submitted in a format accessible to the assessor(s), as stated on the relevant canvas site. If the unit convener and/or tutor are unable to access a submission, or if no submission has been made by the due date and time, a standard late penalty of 10% of the total marks possible for the task may be applied per day, for three days, after which the submission will receive a score of ‘0' in keeping with UC's Assessment Policy.

Students may only use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) as indicated in the assessment instructions for this unit.

Special assessment requirements

Normally an aggregate mark of 50% is required to pass the unit. Additionally, a genuine attempt at all assessments must be made and submitted to pass this unit.

Provision of valid documentation

Please note that the University takes student conduct very seriously. All documentation provided to University staff must be valid and the provision of fraudulent documentation carries with it potentially serious consequences, including suspension and/or exclusion from the University. Note that all allegations of student misconduct will be referred to the Associate Dean for Education (ADE) as a prescribed authority for investigation.

Note that the University supported text matching software is Turnitin, which is available to all units via Canvas. For further information, please see this guide in The Shed -  https://uclearn.canberra.edu.au/courses/96/pages/turnitin-2/

The use of Turnitin is the default position of the university. Should a reason be put forward for deviation from this position, please discuss with ADE.

The University of Canberra’s Assessment Policy and Procedure recognise that unavoidable and/or exceptional professional circumstances can impact a student’s ability to submit assignments on a due date. If you wish to apply for an assignment extension because of such circumstances, you will need to provide a statement addressing why the circumstances are unavoidable and/or exceptional, written by your workplace supervisor. Please understand that this statement does not automatically entitle the applicant to an approved extension; rather, it forms the basis of consideration for an extension that may or may not be approved.

Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at UC. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.

Academic integrity involves the ethical, honest and responsible use, creation and sharing of information. It is critical to the quality of higher education. Our academic integrity values are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage.

UC students have to complete the Academic Integrity Module annually to learn about academic integrity and to understand the consequences of academic integrity breaches (or academic misconduct).

UC uses various strategies and systems, including detection software, to identify potential breaches of academic integrity. Suspected breaches may be investigated, and action can be taken when misconduct is found to have occurred.

Information is provided in the Academic Integrity Policy, Academic Integrity Procedure, and University of Canberra (Student Conduct) Rules 2023. For further advice, visit Study Skills.

Learner engagement

This unit has been designed to ensure that authentic and consistent engagement supports successful completion of unit requirements, including assessment requirements. There is a strong correlation between engagement and success in higher education; conversely, lack of engagement correlates with assessment and unit failure. Students seeking advice when facing failure should expect advice to reflect the extent of their engagement: little or sporadic engagement with unit resources may lead to advice to withdraw and/or to engage authentically and consistently with future units of study.

Allocated participation hours for this course are as follows:

Reading and private study                                   30 hours

Online participation:                                             60 hours

Assessment tasks:                                               60 hours

Assessment 3 task should also factor in feedback engagement.

Inclusion and engagement

It is strongly recommended that students who need assistance in undertaking the unit because of disability or an ongoing health condition register with the InclusionUC as soon as possible so that reasonable adjustment arrangements can be made.

Participation requirements

This is a unit that is delivered in self-paced mode. The course content is designed in weekly blocks that do not require online students to attend any timetabled activities. There may be optional timetabled activities to further support your learning that online students can choose to attend. Assessment deadlines will apply.

Active engagement in all online modules enhances your learning and is strongly advised. Unless specifically stated in the unit outline, there is no mandatory attendance requirement. However, you may elect to attend some optional timetabled activities, as they allow you to ask 'real time' questions to develop your understanding for the relevant assessment tasks. Your participation in online activities will enhance your understanding of the unit content and, therefore, the quality of your assessment responses. Lack of participation may result in your inability to pass assessment items satisfactorily.

Successful engagement with all learning activities in this accredited Initial Teacher Education course is necessary to demonstrate that you have met the Australian Professional Standards for Graduate Teachers (AITSL, 2011).

Students will be required to work collaboratively in the form of peer feedback to satisfy the graduate attributes associated with Assessment 3.

Required IT skills

Laptop and CANVAS access is required. No additional IT skills are required for this course.

In-unit costs

No additional costs are associated with this course though students may like to purchase their own copy of the key text which will also be used for the 11919 Literacy, Language and Literature 2 unit. Students will also be encouraged to begin to develop and curate their own personal library of children's literature, authentic literature and decodable texts suited to early years English, including those texts students have selected for Assessments 2 and 3.
