The Digital Literacy unit develops the skills needed to succeed in an academic environment and the world beyond where communication and access to information is increasingly through digital technologies like internet platforms, social media and mobile devices. Digital literacy enables students to clearly express ideas, ask relevant questions, maintain respect and build trust with the receiver. The Digital Literacy unit will enable students to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information requiring both cognitive and technical skills, and to do so safely and responsibly. The Digital Literacy unit enables students to investigate and explore Academic Integrity within digital literacies in an academic environment, and what it looks like to be ethical in a digital world.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Reflect critically on professional self-development;
2. Utilise digital literacy and creative skills to evaluate, navigate and think critically about information environments;
3. Understand digital citizenship and ethical consequences of behaviour in diverse contexts;
4. Review and evaluate metacognition within an academic environment and apply their understanding.

Artificial Intelligence

Students are permitted to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) as indicated in the assessment instructions for this unit.

GenAI may only be used in authorised ways when completing assessments at UC. This means that GenAI can only be used for an assessment when:

  1. the Unit Convener has authorised GenAI use for that assessment
  2. the student uses GenAI in the way that the assessment instructions allow
  3. the student fully acknowledges their use of GenAI, with proper citations, references and a GenAI Acknowledgement Statement in line with the assessment instructions.

Special assessment requirements

To satisfactorily complete this unit, students must:
• attempt ALL assessment task, and
• achieve 50% overall, and
Upon meeting these requirements students will awarded one of the following grade:
High Distinction HD 85-100
Distinction DI 75-84
Credit CR 65-74
Pass P 50-64
In the event that the student receives a FAIL grade (below 50), one of the following may be used in the final grading:
NX – Fail result based on failure to reach a pass grade in the unit having completed all assessment.
NC - Fail result based on failure to complete one or more of the assessment requirements.
NN - Fail result based on non-participation.

Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at UC. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.

Academic integrity involves the ethical, honest and responsible use, creation and sharing of information. It is critical to the quality of higher education. Our academic integrity values are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage.

UC students have to complete the Academic Integrity Module annually to learn about academic integrity and to understand the consequences of academic integrity breaches (or academic misconduct).

UC uses various strategies and systems, including detection software, to identify potential breaches of academic integrity. Suspected breaches may be investigated, and action can be taken when misconduct is found to have occurred.

Participation requirements

It is noted that there is an anecdotal link between attendance and engagement in tutorials and success in the unit. Participation, or engagement, is part of the learning process so it is assumed students will attend the majority of classes.

This unit has one face-to-face tutorial only. Students are expected to complete the week's learning (indicated by 'Asynchronous' activities within the timetable of activities) in a self-directed manner. This takes place in Canvas and participation is noted by Canvas.

Required IT skills

Students must have access to a Laptop or a Desktop computer, and the internet. If no access please use the computers made available in the library or other spaces such as some of the computer labs on campus.
