Humanities develops the conceptual and critical analytical skills students need to interpret academic material, to participate in tutorial discussions, and to complete assessment tasks. It teaches students how to analyse and organise academic material, and to utilise that material for assessments. The Humanities unit is a space where students are required to learn about, and practice, argument, analysis, and examination. The unit aims to foster deeper understandings of human culture and concerns. It develops the ability to deconstruct ideas, and the language and expressions that surround these ideas to enable students to feel more confident and familiar when evaluating and discussing texts. The unit enables a deeper exploration and investigation of Academic Integrity both in an academic context and in the wider community of learning, and community generally.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Analyse critically, evaluate and convey information within a humanities context;
2. Employ effective research strategies; and
3. Analyse and evaluate academic culture/context and apply this to communication of information within an academic context.

To satisfactorily complete this unit, students must:
• attempt ALL assessment task, and
• achieve 50% overall, and
Upon meeting these requirements students will awarded one of the following grade:
High Distinction HD 85-100
Distinction DI 75-84
Credit CR 65-74
Pass P 50-64
In the event that the student receives a FAIL grade (below 50), one of the following may be used in the final grading:
NX – Fail result based on failure to reach a pass grade in the unit having completed all assessment.
NC - Fail result based on failure to complete one or more of the assessment requirements.
NN - Fail result based on non-participation.

Academic integrity

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

Students are expected to attend as many tutorials as possible to make the most of tutorial discussions that will assist them with their assignments. 

Required IT skills

It is expected that students will have access to a laptop or computer.
