The unit will provide critical overview of institutional functioning of the European Union and its engagement as a global actor in a range of specific fields, including trade and sustainable development, artificial intelligence, climate change and migration. It will examine and compare regulatory governance and cooperation approaches of Australia and the EU in relation to key contemporary challenges and evaluate their contribution to global governance. The unit will provide students with practical and theoretical skills needed to critically analyse, communicate and apply their disciplinary knowledge to complex problems, preparing them for professional practice in the field of global law, international relations and international business.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Explain and analyse the institutional structure of the EU, principles of EU law and governance, and its relevance as a global actor;
2. Critically evaluate approaches to identified contemporary global governance and international business challenges;
3. Apply comparative analytical frameworks to issues of global governance; and
4. Plan, design and execute a research project that identifies, critically examines and communicates a chosen topic of EU governance and its relevance for Australia and global governance.

Special assessment requirements

Artificial intelligence
Students are not permitted to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in assessments for this unit, except for Studiosity Writing Feedback Plus.
GenAI may only be used in authorised ways when completing assessments at UC. This means that GenAI can only be used for an assessment when:
  1. the Unit Convener has authorised GenAI use for that assessment
  2. the student uses GenAI in the way that the assessment instructions allow
  3. the student fully acknowledges their use of GenAI, with proper citations, references and a GenAI Acknowledgement Statement in line with the assessment instructions.
Where the assessment instructions do not specifically state that GenAI may be used and how, then its use is not permitted for that assessment. Students must still provide the required GenAI Acknowledgement Statement to indicate whether GenAI has or has not been used in the preparation of the assessment. If unsure, students should seek advice from the Unit Convener.
