Urban Landscape Systems and Planning (11887.1)

A landscape is the consequence of a myriad of bio-physical, social and cultural systems. In an increasingly complex and uncertain human world, we need to interrogate these relationships and consider the critical importance of more resilient, equitable and ecologically diverse landscapes. This unit is aimed at developing an understanding for the interrelationships of these systems, with a focus on urban environments.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an appreciation for urban planning and the various interrelated issues addressed;
2. Understand the significance of urban landscapes to creating more environmentally responsive and socially equitable cities;
3. Synthesise the key opportunities for change and identify strategic actions to create that change; and
4. Have undertaken the reading, research, and analytical review to develop and coherently present their own position and responses.

Skills development

Planning agencies and communities are recognising the contribution of 'living infrastructure' to creating more ecologically diverse and socially equitable and healthy urban envrionments. This unit provides a focus on how we can improve the interrelationship of the ecological and social systems to managechange and mitigate the threats from climate change. Students will consider past urban planning approaches, contemporary planning/landsscape strategies and demonstrate their understanding of the urban systems and how these are manifest in the urban landscape through tutorial exercisess, workshops, comparative analysis, preparation of presentations of reports.
