The student will orientate to the profession of nursing by investigating the evolution of the role of the registered nurse within the Australian healthcare system. Contemporary Australian healthcare structures and the political and cultural factors that shape health service delivery will be explored. This unit introduces foundational concepts of safety within healthcare regulation, professional conduct and the core capabilities and attributes of a registered nurse. Students will examine the relationship between academic and professional identity and the common features of integrity. The student will adopt reflective approaches to inquiry and appreciate the value of scholarly processes to support their future academic and professional success.
1. Identify and explain the core capabilities, attributes and the professional expectations of a Registered Nurse;
2. Describe the evolution of nursing professionalism in Australia relating this to nursing education and scope of practice, and the regulatory requirements that exist for the protection of the public;
3. Identify contemporary Australian healthcare systems and structures;
4. Investigate the history of Australia's dominant Western cultural and political paradigm and explain how this characterises the contemporary health system; and
5. Apply reflective skills, critical thinking and academic skills to develop scholarly work.
