This unit introduces and familiarises the students with the imaging modalities of ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It covers the physical principles and instrumentation and the basic scanning techniques and protocols used in ultrasound and MRI clinical practice. It also covers safety issues associated with the use of ultrasound, radio-waves and high magnetic field strengths.
1. Appraise and integrate an understanding of the physical principles, instrumentation and image formation methods that underpin the clinical applications of ultrasound and MRI;
2. Evaluate the safety issues and potential biological effects of the use of ultrasound, radio-waves and strong magnetic fields as used clinically in ultrasound and MRI examinations;
3. Appraise and integrate the imaging protocols and techniques of the commonly performed clinical applications in ultrasound and MRI; and
4. Consolidate and synthesise previously gained knowledge of anatomical structures and common pathologies in relation to ultrasound and MR images.
