The unit is designed to strengthen student research knowledge, and research skills through supervised independent study and research work. The aim is to induct groups of students into a rich research culture.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Execute a research project to a standard acceptable to their field of study;
2. Undertake an independent analysis of data relating their research project to existing literature and a wider societal relevance; and
3. Utilise research and technical skills in an appropriate manner to their field of study.

Required texts

There are no recommended texts although the University library has a wide range of resources likely to cover the student's research topic as well as research methodology. The Research Methods in Health Sciences unit Canvas site (from the first semester of the Honours course) should still be available to you as a resource throughout your Honours studies.

Artificial intelligence

Students are not permitted to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in assessments for this unit.

GenAI may only be used in authorised ways when completing assessments at UC. This means that GenAI can only be used for an assessment when:

  1. the Unit Convener has authorised GenAI use for that assessment
  2. the student uses GenAI in the way that the assessment instructions allow
  3. the student fully acknowledges their use of GenAI, with proper citations, references and a GenAI Acknowledgement Statement in line with the assessment instructions.

Where the assessment instructions do not specifically state that GenAI may be used and how, then its use is not permitted for that assessment. Students must still provide the required GenAI Acknowledgement Statement to indicate whether GenAI has or has not been used in the preparation of the assessment. If unsure, students should seek advice from the Unit Convener.

Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at UC. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.

Academic integrity involves the ethical, honest and responsible use, creation and sharing of information. It is critical to the quality of higher education. Our academic integrity values are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage.

UC students have to complete the Academic Integrity Module annually to learn about academic integrity and to understand the consequences of academic integrity breaches (or academic misconduct).

UC uses various strategies and systems, including detection software, to identify potential breaches of academic integrity. Suspected breaches may be investigated, and action can be taken when misconduct is found to have occurred.

Participation requirements

Student projects will often utilise space and equipment at the University of Canberra or partner organisation. Use of this space and equipment is generally subject to training and approval such as familiarity with occupational health and safety issues. Students should check with relevant staff if this applies to them and undergo appropriate processes.

Required IT skills

Students should be conversant with searching for relevant articles via electronic means, the use of Canvas, and word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software. Specialist IT skills may be required for some projects and students should negotiate training opportunities with their supervisor(s).

There are no specific IT skills required for the conduct of this unit. Students are required to submit computer drafted work as well as undertake oral presentations with the aid of lecterns and projection screens. A range of software is commonly employed for these purposes. Individual student projects may require the learning of specific software and equipment, and this will be undertaken with the assistance of supervisors, technicians and other related staff.

In-unit costs

There are no extra costs associated with this unit. Research conducted towards the completion of the Honours program may incur some costs associated with the process of data collection, analysis and interpretation. In the first instance students should work with supervisors to ensure costs associated with conducting the research are eliminated or where unavoidable, modest. Where expenses are unavoidable students are offered a small amount towards research project costs. Please contact the unit convenor, your supervisor, or administrative staff for details.

Work placement, internships or practicums

There are no specific work integrated learning components to this unit. Many research projects will however incorporate opportunities to assist with industry activities which may also be important to the research project. Students must not complete extra activities in industry settings related to their projects unless they are enrolled in one of the four units from the Health Sciences Honours course. This can be done normally in December the year before the full Honours year.

Additional information

Students are encouraged to partake in related research activities (e.g. Faculty of Health presentations) as these opportunities all enrich the student experience as well as research environment across their Discipline and related research centres. As such opportunities become available they will be advertised on the course and unit Canvas pages.
