In this unit students will be exposed to the latest 'live' communication trends and innovations from professional contexts. Students will engage with industry and academic experts, including academics from the University of Canberras News and Media Research Centre. Students will track and evaluate contemporary technological, social and economic trends and then apply this knowledge to real-world scenarios. Students will develop innovative thinking skills and will be working at the leading edge in the communication and media field.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1. Assess and articulate how trends are used to drive communication innovation for optimal practice;
2. Interpret and intellectually engage with theoretical and practical applications of media communication; and
3. Investigate a l 'live' communication trend and judge its relevance and impact to a specified field or industry.

Submission of assessment items
Extensions & Late submissions
Students are partially permitted to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and only where/when instructed, as indicated in the assessment instructions for this unit, as well as Studiosity Writing Feedback Plus.
GenAI may only be used in authorised ways when completing assessments at UC or during in-class activities. This means that GenAI can only be used for an assessment when:
- the Unit Convener has authorised GenAI use for that assessment
- the student uses GenAI in the way that the assessment instructions allow
- the student fully acknowledges their use of GenAI, with proper citations, references and a GenAI Acknowledgement Statement in line with the assessment instructions.
- Where the assessment instructions do not specifically state that GenAI may be used and how, then its use is not permitted for that assessment. Students must still provide the required - GenAI Acknowledgement Statement to indicate whether GenAI has or has not been used in the preparation of the assessment. If unsure, students should seek advice from the Unit Convener.

Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at UC. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.

Participation requirements
Students are expected to keep up with weekly lectures and reading materials, and attend classes, ensuring that they set aside the required amount of time for class participation each week. Students are also expected to actively participate in class, engaging actively with discussion questions assigned by their tutor as well as critically, productively and respectfully engaging with their peers' work, ideas and perspectives.
