BE Digital Design Techniques 03: Digital Cities (11626.2)

This unit explores concepts of sustainable design in the built environment, spanning global perspectives to the local Australian context. Students are introduced to passive and active environmental design in response to Country, climate change, whole life carbon, and environmental rating systems. The unit examines the nexus between architecture and the city and offers a way to delve into the built environment as a set of terrestrial events, processes and systems framed through energy, ecology, culture and politics in designing place-responsive and responsible outcomes.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Identify the key aspects of sustainability across scales and their relationship to climate change, outcomes for Country and health and wellbeing;
2. Understand operational, embodied and whole life carbon;
3. Interpret impact on the built environment through the processes and systems of construction social and cultural ecologies; and
4. Develop design responses to sustainable cities and architecture.

Corequisites

Must be enrolled in 290JA Bachelor of Landscape Design, ABB001 Bachelor of the Built Environment (Architecture), ABB002 Bachelor of the Built Environment (Interior Architecture) or ABB201 Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours).

Assumed knowledge
