This unit will introduce students to the use of mapping tools and data mining techniques to extract and visualise information related to the built environment. Students will engage with a range of urban datasets including Geographic Information System (GIS), Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) imagery and emergent spatial information arising from the growing impact of smart devices associated with the Internet-of-Things (IoTs). Students will be challenged to speculate on the influence and capacity of such information systems to operate as quantitative and qualitative environmental design and analytical tools.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Interact with open-source mapping systems and Geographic Information System (GIS) data;
2. Use and extend simple code-based (algorithmic) techniques to graphically interrogate maps, datasets and images;
3. Establish formal relationships between latent and emergent urban data; and
4. Develop compelling and creative visualisations of complex urban relationships and phenomena.

At the completion of this unit, students will:

> Be able to work confidently between databases and CAD environments.

> Automate simple tasks using Rhino3D Grasshopper

> Be confident working between CAD environments (Rhino3D) and vector graphic software (Adobe Illustrator) to produce creative and beautiful urban representations. 

> Develop creative maps and urban representations using a range of media techniques

Corequisites

Must be enrolled in 290JA Bachelor of Landscape Design, ABB001 Bachelor of the Built Environment (Architecture), ABB002 Bachelor of the Built Environment (Interior Architecture) or ABB201 Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours).

Assumed knowledge

1. A working knowledge of 3D CAD modelling software (preferably Rhino3D).
2. Ability to work with and manipulate vector graphics using industry standard software (i.e. Illustrator).

Participation requirements

The skills necessary to complete this unit will be developed during the weekly computer lab sessions (tutorials). As such, in order to succeed in this unit it is expected that every student attends all weekly computer lab session. 

Students who attend campus for class or other purposes must play their part in keeping our campus and community safe by following these basic guidelines to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission: 

  • Practise good hand hygiene, washing hands regularly; 

  • If you do happen to cough or sneeze, please do so into the crook of your elbow, dispose of tissues immediately and wash hands immediately 

  • Practise effective physical distancing; 

  • Follow all directions of teaching and other UC staff regarding safety measures; 

Required IT skills

No specific IT skills are required however a basic working knowledge of 2D CAD drawing, modelling with Rhino3D, vector graphic manipulation using Adobe Illustrator, image post-production using Adobe Photoshop and interaction with databases using either Google Sheets or MS Excel would be highly advantageous.

 

The skills necessary to complete this unit will be developed during the weekly tutorials and further supported by self-paced videos made available on the unit's CANVAS site. At the completion of this unit, students will:

> Be able to work between databases and CAD environments.

> Automate simple tasks using custom Rhino3D Grasshopper definitions

> Be confident working between CAD environments (Rhino3D) and vector graphic software (Adobe Illustrator) to produce creative and beautiful urban representations. 

> Develop innovative and creative maps and urban visualisations using a range of media techniques and strategies

 

In-unit costs

The unit will use printed drawings and physical models for all presentations.
