Introduction to Cyber Safety (11622.1)

It's becoming essential for everyone to be cyber safe and learn to identify and avoid dangerous situations online and improve the security of digital life, our devices and the network. This unit will provide the students with introductory knowledge and skills of cyber safety, knowledge of proactive approaches that address the complex societal situations and behaviours that manifest in the online world. The students will be able to recognise threats, risks and vulnerabilities in cyber space. This includes the threats in personal, home and organisation encompass such as networks, devices, applications, data. The unit also covers common cyber security attack mechanisms and vulnerabilities as well as safety issues involving in Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Students will learn legal, ethical, and professional Issues, national and international standards, the methods to protect data and privacy, what to do after a safety breach, and netiquette.

The unit arms students with the knowledge and practical skills in cyber safety to be job-ready to work in digital world in various fields and also for future career development. Further, the unit promotes and strengthens important generic skills, such as communication, analysis and inquiry, problem solving, independent and group working, and professionalism and social responsibility.

This unit is co-taught with Introduction to Cyber Safety G, 11623.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Understand the cyber risks and threats;
2. Apply the principles and practices of cyber safety;
3. Demonstrate the knowledge of human rights and digital ethic;
4. Protect personal, family and business privacy and digital assets in the cyber space; and
