Clinical Conditions 2 (11546.1)

This unit aims to advance the applied knowledge and skills developed in Clinical Conditions 1 for exercise physiology practice across a wider range of clinical conditions and disorders. Students will expand on the knowledge and skills applied to clients and special populations with complex health needs from a range of other conditions, including but not limited to the target clinical domains for ESSA accreditation. Students will formulate their clinical approach to exercise interventions within the biopsychosocial health and multidisciplinary care frameworks. Students will enhance their competencies in communication, assessment, exercise prescription, program management, decision-making and clinical reasoning in order to implement safe and effective exercise interventions for complex clients with multiple conditions.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate broad, factual and coherent knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiological bases of Accredited Exercise Physiology target conditions, as well as contemporary areas of practice;
2. Integrate applied knowledge, with practical skills to design, implement and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions that account for sociocultural and individual factors;
3. Analyse, apply, develop and communicate assessments, exercise prescription and programs for rehabilitation or management of chronic and complex clinical conditions relevant to the scope of practice of an Accredited Exercise Physiologist;
4. Critique and explain case-based treatment plans, considering priorities of comorbidity, associated medical, surgical and allied health treatments, referral and assessment information, individual context and scientific evidence;
5. Apply cognitive and creative skills to teach, coach and motivate clients to facilitate self-management of exercise and healthy lifestyle, using biopsychosocial framework, models of behaviour change, scientific evidence and applied professional practice knowledge;
6. Formulate and communicate sound clinical reasoning and decision making informed by evidence-based practice and client-centred care; and
7. Practice clinical exercise physiology competencies in a range of professional environments.

This unit is only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Exercise Physiology and Rehabilitation.
