This subject introduces and develops the student's foundation academic and technical skills relevant to the building construction industry. Hands-on activities within the workshop environmental will assist in critical knowledge and skill development. The unit will also cover occupational health and safety principles, devices, systems, regulations, legislations and approaches used for developing and maintaining a safe work environment and a healthy career in the industry.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Define the physical and chemical properties of various materials used in the building construction industry;
2. Apply numerical processes to solve fundamental building construction management problems;
3. Develop and report on monitoring schemes used to assess the workplace environment; and
4. Evaluate and communicate how codes and risk assessment processes can be used to develop and maintain a safe and healthy work environment.

Workshop assessment items are to be submitted at the completion of the workshop class.

Special assessment requirements

Students must achieve an overall unit mark of 50 % or higher to pass this unit.

Students must achieve at least 40% for the final test to be eligible to pass this unit.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

To gain the most from the unit is advised that students attend all lectures and workshops.

As the workshops have graded activities it is important students attend all weekly workshops so that the most can be gained from the learning activities and so that the workshop assessment item can be completed.

Required IT skills

All students are assumed to have basic computer and calculator skills.

In-unit costs

For this unit a non-graphical and non-programable calculator is required for each student.
