There will be at least three compulsory (assessable) workshop sessions held on campus where students will be exposed to preparing for an internship; generic and personal skills required; awareness; professional practices; relevant theories and services of the UC Careers office. Students would build on the professional planning modules in Foundations of Law and Justice.
Learning outcomesAfter successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Evaluate and report on the relationships between discipline specific theories and actual professional practice through self-directed learning;
2. Analyse discipline specific related practices and identify how these relations could be improved, including reflecting on how social and ethical issues in the workplace impact on practice;
3. Work individually and in groups to communicate their experiences both orally and in written form, with confidence and clarity; and
4. Apply practical skills, including analysis, research, problem solving and writing in a law or justice workplace to solve a real legal or justice problem or problems.

PrerequisitesThis unit is only available to students in the Master of Laws and Juris Doctor courses.
Enrolment in this unit is subject to the availability of a suitable placement and the approval of the unit convener.
Students in the Master of Laws must have completed at least 4 postgraduate or graduate level units, including a research unit, averaging a credit grade or higher.
Students in the Juris Doctor must have completed at least 12 postgraduate or graduate level law units, including a research unit, averaging a credit grade or higher.

In order to get the most out of your studies, it is strongly recommended that you plan your time commitments, actively engage in class discussions (online or face-to-face) and work with your peers as part of your study. The amount of time you will need to spend on study in this unit will depend on a number of factors including your prior knowledge, learning skill level and learning style. Nevertheless, in planning your time commitments you should note that for this 12 credit point unit the total notional workload over a semester or term is assumed to be 300 hours.
The professional nature of this unit requires your participation at all learning activities (online activities, workshops, practicals etc. if scheduled – see section 3) for the successful completion of this unit.
At least one week before the first day at your placement each student must complete the "InPlace" software programme which can be found on the Canvas or UC website where you will submit all details of your placement including the business name; supervisor's name, addresses, email address, dates of internship etc BEFORE your Internship commences. When approved by the Unit Convener an email will be sent to both you and your supervisor indicating confirmation. Further details on how to use InPlace will be given during the first workshop in Week 1.
Additionally you are required to complete 300 hours in the workplace.
Required IT skills
You are assumed to have adequate skills in the use of word processing and spreadsheet programs, Internet browsers and search engines. If you feel you do not have adequate skills, please discuss the matter with the unit convener.
No additional costs beyond your travel, accommodation expenses, a police check (if required - currently approximately cost approximately $29) together with your normal unit enrolment fee are anticipated. If you are working with children you may also require a current working with children approval certificate (currently these are free for unpaid internship positions). Work placement, internships or practicums
This unit involves an off campus Internship placements under the supervision of a workplace supervisor and therefore, additional student responsibilities are required in addition to those described in this section. Workplace learning requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics. Business confidentiality must always be maintained, including for assessment items such as reports, essays, online activities and during workshops. Please discuss this with your supervisor/unit convenor before producing assessment items. The professional nature of this unit also requires full participation in all learning activities (workshops, Convener meetings etc. for the successful completion of this unit.
